# Feature alternating

> Four feature rows, each a 4:3 frame set against its copy, with the seam flipping side to side down the page. The hairline that closes each row runs only under the text half, so the rule changes sides with the picture and the section never squares up on one edge. Example images are included and can be replaced in the editor. States no colour and no font of its own.

## Variations (3)

### Alternating rows (the default)

Identical markup in every theme.

Four rows on your base ground, the frames alternating left and right, each row closed by a hairline in currentColor under the text half only.

### Mist and eucalyptus

This variation states its own colours and states its own type: identical in every theme.

A physiotherapy clinic's treatments explained: clinical mist ground, deep green ink, eucalyptus rules under the text half, rounded photographs and a length and price line per treatment, in a book serif over Avenir Next.

### Night alternating

Identical markup in every theme.

The colour axis, and the only move the contract guarantees in every theme: the band inverts to your contrast with your base on it. The half-width hairlines invert with it, because they are stated as currentColor rather than as a colour of their own.

## The signature moment: the rule that changes sides

**The hairline that closes each row runs only under the text half.** It is not a
divider across the section; it is a rule the width of one column, and because
the picture and the copy swap sides every row, the rule swaps with them. Read
down the band, the four rules step left, right, left, right, and the section
never squares up on a single edge the way an ordinary alternating layout does.

Two things hold it together. The columns are aligned to the **bottom**, so the
foot of the picture and the rule under the copy sit on the same line, and each
row reads as one horizontal member rather than as two blocks that happen to be
side by side. And the rule is `currentColor`, so it is exactly the colour of the
text above it, on any ground and in any theme.

## What it inherits from your theme

- **The typeface.** No font family is stated anywhere. The labels, the headings
and the copy are all set in your face.
- **Your colours.** The ground asks for `base` and everything on it asks for
`contrast`, the two slugs every stock block theme defines, each written as a
fallback chain ending on a colour WordPress itself guarantees. Nothing here
  can resolve to nothing.
- **Your spacing scale.** The band's padding, the gap between rows and the space
under each rule are spacing presets, so a theme with a generous scale gets a
taller section without you editing anything.
- **Your images.** The frames include example photographs with the crop already set. Choose Replace on an image to use your own media.

## What it decides for itself

- **Full bleed with its own measure.** The section spans the viewport and holds
its content to 1240px, so it reads as a band and not as another column of body
  text.
- **The proportion.** The picture takes 46% of the row and the copy 54%, so the
copy is the wider half and the pictures read as evidence rather than as the
  subject.
- **The crop.** Every frame is 4:3 with `scale: cover`, so whatever the buyer
uploads is cropped to the proportion the rhythm needs and no row grows taller
  than its neighbours.
- **The ramp.** A 14px tracked uppercase label, a `clamp()` heading from 1.5rem
  to 2.125rem at line-height 1.1, and copy from 1rem to 1.0625rem at 1.6. No
type sits on a photograph anywhere in the pattern.
- **Where it stacks.** Below 782px WordPress stacks the columns in document
order, so odd rows put the picture first and even rows put the copy first. The
alternation survives as a rhythm in the stack rather than as a left and right.

## What to change first

1. **The four pictures.** Click each frame and pick from your media library. The
aspect ratio and the crop are already set, so nothing reflows.
2. **The four labels.** One or two words. They are the smallest type in the
section and they carry the reading order.
3. **The headings.** Three to six words each. Longer than that and the row's
heading wraps to three lines while its picture stays the same height.
4. **The number of rows.** Duplicate a row group and swap the two columns inside
it to keep the alternation. Keep the hairline group with the copy, not with
the picture: that is the signature.
5. **The opening heading.** It is held to a 40rem measure inside the wider band
by a nested group, so it breaks into two or three strong lines. Delete the
header group and the section opens straight onto the first row.

## The Mist and eucalyptus look

A Styled variation for a clinic, with its own colours, type and copy (a
physiotherapy practice explaining its treatments). Clinical mist ground
`#f3f7f5`, deep green ink `#1e3932`, and the rule under the text half drawn as
a 3px eucalyptus `#4f7f6a` line, so the signature survives the change of
palette. Photographs take a 14px radius, each row closes on a length and price
line, and the band ends on a pill button and an underlined insurer link.
Headings are a book serif stack (Iowan Old Style, Palatino, Georgia), copy
Avenir Next falling back to Segoe UI, Helvetica Neue and Arial. Every text pair
is measured on the mist ground above 4.5:1; eucalyptus is only ever a rule. Take
the base if you want your theme's colours.

## Notes

- Core blocks only: group, columns, column, heading, paragraph, image. No
  plugin, nothing to keep updated.
- The rules are per-side group borders rather than separator blocks, which is
what lets one run under a single column instead of across the section.
- Example image URLs are included in the copied pattern; see [image credits](/image-credits/) for sources and licenses.
- Text is measured at 4.5:1 against the ground it actually sits on, and the row
headings qualify at 3:1 but are held to the same pair as the copy because they
  use the same chain.

## Included images

The copied markup includes WordPress Photo Directory example photographs. The public image URLs
keep the examples visible after pasting. Select an image or cover and choose
**Replace** to use your own Media Library files. See [image credits](/image-credits/)
for the sources and licenses. Pasting an image URL does not import a Media Library
attachment.
