Quote gallery: WordPress Block Pattern, Pattern Paste Canonical: https://patternpaste.com/pattern/quote-gallery.html Core Patterns (https://patternpaste.com/patterns/) Gallery (https://patternpaste.com/patterns/gallery/) Catalogue access Standard # Quote gallery A display-size quotation held between two portrait frames. The centre column is the widest and the largest thing in the section; the two 3:4 frames are smaller, bottom-aligned and captioned, so they read as brackets around the sentence. No word sits on a photograph. Includes replaceable example images. ## All patterns Search patterns Loading patterns… The signature moment ## The type is the centrepiece and the photographs are the brackets Every other gallery in this library makes the photographs the subject and the type incidental: a caption under a frame, a label in a margin, a numeral over a run. This one inverts the hierarchy. The quotation is the widest column and the largest thing in the section (clamp(1.75rem, 3.4vw, 3rem), weight 600, -0.03em, line-height 1.15), and the frames are deliberately undersized, a fifth of the measure each, so they cannot compete with it. What the frames do instead is hold the sentence: two portraits of the same proportion at the same size on either side of it, bottom-aligned to the attribution, which is what a pair of brackets is. Theme handoff ## What comes from where ### Theme and pattern Inherits: every colour (the band is a base chain, all four pieces of type a contrast chain, two rungs each), the typeface, and the spacing rhythm (spacing|80 above and below the band, spacing|50 between stacked columns, spacing|40 between quotation and attribution, spacing|20 between each frame and its caption). Decides: the 20/56/20 division, the 1240px measure and the clamp(1.25rem, 4vw, 4rem) gutters, the clamp(1.5rem, 3.5vw, 3.5rem) column gap, the 3:4 crop on both frames with scale: cover, the bottom alignment, and the whole type ramp: the quotation's clamp, weight, negative tracking and 1.15 leading, and the 13px, 0.2em-tracked uppercase attribution against the 13px, 0.16em-tracked captions. Full pattern notes ## Why it works, and how it is built Open a topic for the complete design reasoning, editing guidance and implementation notes. Design rationaleComposition, intent and nearest alternatives ### Overview A gallery section whose centre is a sentence. One core/columns holds three columns: a 3:4 portrait frame at 20% of the measure, a 56% centre column carrying a display-size quotation with a tracked attribution under it, and a second 3:4 frame at 20%. All three columns are aligned to the bottom, so the two frame captions and the attribution line sit on one baseline. Nothing a visitor reads sits on a photograph; every word is on the band's own ground. ### The signature moment: the type is the centrepiece and the photographs are the brackets Every other gallery in this library makes the photographs the subject and the type incidental: a caption under a frame, a label in a margin, a numeral over a run. It survives colourlessness because it is made of scale and symmetry and nothing else. There is no rule, no plate, no tint and no accent anywhere in the section: the whole design is the 20/56/20 division, one aspect ratio used twice, and the size difference between 48px and 13px. Every one of those is still true in a theme that defines no presets at all. It is not a third pull-quote. pull-quote is a testimonial band with an off-centre column and no images; quote-break is a quotation interrupting a reading column, held by two rules that run past it. Here the photographs are load-bearing: remove them and the composition is gone, because the brackets are what make the sentence a centrepiece rather than a paragraph. Make it yoursVariations and the edits to make first ### Variations - Ink quote: the band inverts. The ground becomes a contrast chain and every piece of type a base chain, on the quotation, the attribution and both captions. The composition, the widths, the crops and the alignment are identical to the base's; only the colour relationship changes, which is the one axis a variation is allowed to move. It suits photographs that are mostly light, where an inked band gives the two frames an edge to sit against. Theme behaviourInheritance, fixed decisions and contrast ### What it inherits, what it decides Inherits: every colour (the band is a base chain, all four pieces of type a contrast chain, two rungs each), the typeface, and the spacing rhythm (spacing|80 above and below the band, spacing|50 between stacked columns, spacing|40 between quotation and attribution, spacing|20 between each frame and its caption). ### Contrast Every pair in the section is a contrast chain on a base chain, inverted in the variation. The quotation is the only text judged at the 3:1 large-text bar: it floors at 28px, which is above the 24px threshold at every viewport width. The attribution and both frame captions are 13px and are held to the full 4.5:1; they are made small by size and tracking, never by fading the colour, and both carry the band's full-strength ink. ### Display type Off the theme's ladder on purpose, because the size is the composition: - paragraph at clamp(1.75rem, 3.4vw, 3rem) Technical notesBlock mechanics, responsive behaviour and constraints ### Why paragraphs and not core/quote The quotation is a core/paragraph and the attribution is another, for the same reason as quote-break: core/quote and core/pullquote take their border, their italic and their padding from the theme, and each stock block theme does something different with them, so a quotation that is sometimes italic, sometimes bordered and sometimes neither is not one design. Paragraphs with explicit proportion are the same design everywhere. The quotation marks are typed, as curly quotes, inside the paragraph. ### The bottom alignment, and the trap under it verticalAlignment: "bottom" is set on the core/columns block and on each core/column. The columns-level class alone does nothing on the front end, because core ships align-items: normal !important on the column, which overrides it; cover-trio shipped that way in its first draft and the frames sat top-aligned. So each column carries is-vertically-aligned-bottom in its own right. With the frames shorter than the type block, the alignment is what puts the two captions level with the attribution instead of leaving them floating halfway up the band. ### What happens at 390 Core stacks core/columns below 782px, so the section becomes frame, quote, frame in that order, each at the full width of the phone. Two things go, and they should be said plainly: - The bracketing goes, because there is no left and right on a phone. Two frames above and below a sentence are a sequence, not brackets. - The scale inversion goes with it. The quotation floors at 28px, while each frame is now the full 350px of column width and therefore about 467px tall by its own 3:4 ratio. On a phone the photographs are the biggest things on the screen, which is the opposite of the signature. What still works is the symmetry and the order: one frame, the sentence, one frame, with the quotation still the only display-size type in the section and the two captions still holding the same weight and tracking. It reads as a deliberate stack rather than as a broken row, and the quotation is still the thing you read first because it is the only large type there. It is honestly a weaker composition than the desktop one, not an equal one; the idea is a left-and-right idea and a phone does not have a left and right. ### What a buyer changes first - The photographs. Both image blocks include example photographs. Choose Replace to select an image, set the focal point. The 3:4 crop and object-fit: cover are already set, so any upload is cropped to the proportion the composition needs. Two portraits of the same subject or the same room read as brackets; two unrelated landscapes do not. - The quotation. Keep it under about 110 characters. At 48px it is six or seven lines in the centre column, which is what makes it the tallest thing in the section; much shorter and the frames start to out-measure it, much longer and it stops being a quotation. - The attribution and the two captions. All three are uppercase and tracked, and all three want to be short: under about 26 characters for the attribution and under about 14 for each caption, so no incidental label wraps at 390. ### Measured The base and the variation both hold to the preset contract, survive an editor round-trip, and were rendered and inspected at 1280 and 390. ### Included images The copied markup includes WordPress Photo Directory example photographs. The public image URLs keep the examples visible after pasting. Select an image or cover and choose Replace to use your own Media Library files. See image credits (https://patternpaste.com/image-credits/) for the sources and licenses. Pasting an image URL does not import a Media Library attachment. Questions ## Quote gallery: common questions Does Quote gallery need a plugin? No. It is built only from core WordPress blocks (column, columns, group, image and paragraph), so it pastes into the block editor with nothing to install. Will Quote gallery match my theme? Yes. It names no colour or font of its own: every colour, size and space is a preset from your theme, so it takes your theme’s palette and type when pasted. How many variations does Quote gallery have? 2: Paper quote and Ink quote. Each is its own markup; choose one in the toolbar above the preview before you copy. Can I use my own images? Yes. Sample images stay in the copied blocks. Replace them in WordPress; pasting does not upload them to your Media Library. Is Quote gallery free? It is included with a subscription, with every Core Pattern and variation. 62 Core Patterns are free to copy without one. 5.0KB of core-block markup, 5 blocks (column, columns, group, image, paragraph), and nothing else: paste it into the block editor and it becomes editable blocks wearing your theme. The signature is the margin: the image is a window cut in the page rather than a band across it, and the paper around it is what you notice. A small opaque plate in the picture's bottom-right corner carries the caption, so no type ever sits on the photograph. The still-image version includes an example photograph; select your own clip for the video version. States no colour and no font of its own. (https://patternpaste.com/pattern/hero-aperture.html)Editorial Article footer The close of an article: a portrait of the author beside their name, the biography under both inside a currentColor slip held to the middle half of the measure, and the previous and the next post hanging off the two outer edges so the section reads as a doorway rather than a footer. The name, the biography and the two neighbours are dynamic core blocks, so they are the post's own and the preview here is sample data; the portrait is an ordinary image block you swap for your author's own. The previous and next links only resolve on a single post template, which is where this pattern belongs. (https://patternpaste.com/pattern/article-footer.html)Contact Contact cover ledger A full-bleed contact cover: a display heading in the top left, and a ruled ledger of address, hours, phone and email in the far lower-right corner, label left and value right between hairline rules, with the photograph running between them. A heavy veil of your theme's contrast colour keeps every line legible whatever photograph you choose. The ledger drops under the heading on a phone. Includes a replaceable example photograph. States no colour and no font of its own. Ships with a short hand-off row on your theme's paper below it. (https://patternpaste.com/pattern/contact-cover-ledger.html) #### Before you paste Requires a block theme on WordPress 7.0 to 7.1. Classic themes and page builders are outside our supported setup. Adaptive patterns use the block theme’s colour, spacing and typography presets; styled variations declare their own colours or type. How we test patterns (https://patternpaste.com/how-we-test/) Sample images stay in the copied blocks. Replace them in WordPress; pasting does not upload them to your Media Library. Video variations need your own clip.
