Nine minutes at the counter became ninety seconds

The trade counter was the bottleneck, not the website. We rebuilt ordering around the twelve lines that make up most of a Tuesday morning, and left the long tail where it had always been: in the catalogue, searchable.

A shop that finally reads on a phone first

Two thirds of their orders came from a phone and every template had been drawn for a desktop. We started again from the smallest screen, and the desktop turned out to need less than anyone expected.

Forty years of research, one way in

Four decades of papers sat in three archives that had never agreed on a field name. One index now covers all of them, and a reader who knows only the author’s surname finds the paper in a single search.

The workshop diary stopped being a paper book

Bookings, parts and the collection call all lived in one ledger on the bench. Putting it online meant asking the mechanics what they actually wrote down, then building that, rather than the process the software wanted.

Plain words, in the place people were stuck

Nobody was leaving because of the price. They were leaving on the third page, where the wording had been written for a regulator. We rewrote it for the person paying, and the enquiries that arrived were better ones.
