How the studio works, from the front door to your last day

The questions members ask most, answered in a few paragraphs. Pick one from the list, or read straight down.

Opening hours

The doors open at 7am and close at 10pm on weekdays, and run from 9am to 6pm at weekends. The front desk is staffed from 9am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Outside staffed hours your fob opens the side door on Tanner Street. Please pull it shut behind you.

Bank holidays follow the weekend hours, and the building closes completely on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. We post any other changes, such as a closure for maintenance, on the noticeboard by the lift and in the members app at least a week ahead.

If you plan to work late regularly, let the desk know. It helps us plan heating and cleaning, and it means someone will notice if a light is left on long after you would normally have gone home.

Fobs and access

Every member has one fob, and it is yours alone: please do not lend it, even for an hour. It opens the building, your floor and the bike store.

Tell the desk the same day if you lose it. We switch the old one off at once, and a replacement costs the same as a day pass.

Fobs log the doors they open, and nothing else. We use those records only to investigate a security problem, never to track attendance, and they are deleted after ninety days.

If your fob stops working, it is usually the battery or a door that has not synced overnight. Try the side door, then call the desk number on the back of the fob; outside staffed hours the call goes to our on-call manager.

Bringing guests

You can bring up to two guests at a time. Sign them in at the desk when they arrive and stay with them while they are in the building.

A guest staying longer than two hours, or working at a desk of their own, needs a day pass.

Guests can use the ground floor and meeting rooms you have booked, but not the quiet floor or the kitchen fridge. Please brief them on the fire exits when they arrive; it takes a minute and it is the one thing we insist on.

For events with more than ten guests, such as a launch or a workshop, talk to the desk at least two weeks ahead. We can usually offer the Long Room out of hours, with a simple checklist for setting up and clearing away.

Meeting rooms

Book rooms in the members app, up to two hours at a time and up to two weeks ahead. Unused bookings release after fifteen minutes.

  • The Small Room seats four, with a screen
  • The Long Room seats ten, with a screen and a whiteboard wall
  • Phone booths are first come, first served

Screens accept a cable or wireless casting, with instructions on the wall beside each one. Leave the room as you found it: chairs back, whiteboard wiped and any post-it notes in the recycling.

If you need a room regularly, such as for a weekly team meeting, ask the desk to set up a standing booking. We keep a few slots for recurring use so they do not crowd out everyone else.

The quiet floor

The second floor is for heads-down work. Take calls in a booth or on the ground floor, keep conversations to a whisper and wear headphones for anything with sound.

If someone forgets, a quiet word is fine; the desk will step in if it keeps happening.

Desks on the quiet floor are first come, first served, and cannot be held with a bag or a jacket for more than an hour. If you need the same desk every day, a fixed desk membership reserves one for you on the first floor.

The quiet floor has its own thermostat and the windows open. Please agree any change with the people nearest to you; a note on the desk is fine if you would rather not interrupt.

Kitchen

Coffee, tea and milk are on us. Label anything you keep in the fridge with your name and the date.

We clear the fridge at 4pm every Friday. Rinse your cup and put it in the dishwasher rather than the sink.

There is a microwave, a toaster and a small oven for reheating. Please do not cook anything with a strong smell; the kitchens open onto shared floors and lunch travels further than you might think.

Oat and soya milk are in the door of the fridge. If something runs out, write it on the list on the fridge or tell the desk, and we restock it the next morning.

Post and parcels

Use your name, then Northside Studio, 14 Tanner Street as your business address. Letters go in your pigeonhole by noon.

The desk holds parcels for seven days and messages you when one arrives. Anything larger than a carry-on case needs a word with us first.

We cannot accept deliveries for anything perishable, alcohol that needs a signature or anything addressed to a business that is not a current member. Couriers are sent away politely, with a note of where to redirect.

If you would like your post scanned and emailed while you are away, the desk offers that as a small monthly add-on. Letters are shredded after scanning unless you ask us to keep them.

Printing

Membership includes 100 pages a month, black and white or colour. Send to the Studio printer, then tap your fob on the reader to release the job.

Unreleased jobs clear overnight, so nobody collects your contract by mistake.

Extra pages are charged at cost on your monthly invoice, and the app shows your running total. Large jobs, such as a hundred copies of a brochure, are better sent to a print shop; the desk keeps a list of local ones that deliver.

There is a scanner on the same machine. Scans go to the email address on your membership, and the machine keeps no copy once they are sent.

Bikes and parking

The bike store is in the basement, reached by the ramp on the left of the building. Your fob opens it; locks are still a good idea.

There is no car parking on site. The nearest public car park is on Mill Lane, four minutes on foot.

Showers and lockers are next to the bike store, so you can arrive in cycling kit and change before heading upstairs. Towels are not provided; a small locker is included in every membership.

The building is a short walk from two bus routes and ten minutes from the station. If you need a disabled parking space for a visit, ask the desk and we will reserve one on the street outside.

Dogs

Calm, house-trained dogs are welcome on the ground floor. Register yours with the desk once, and keep it on a lead in shared spaces.

Dogs stay off the quiet floor and out of the kitchen, and one bark too many is a sign to take a walk.

Bring a bed and a water bowl; there is a fresh water tap beside the back door. Clean up after your dog straight away, inside and out, and let the desk know about any accident indoors so it can be cleaned properly.

Some members are allergic or nervous around dogs. If someone asks you to give them space, please do, without needing a reason.

In an emergency

If the alarm sounds, leave by the nearest exit, leave your things and do not use the lift. The assembly point is the car park on Mill Lane.

  • First aid kits hang beside each kitchen
  • The defibrillator is at the front desk
  • Report any accident to the desk the same day

The alarm is tested every Tuesday at 10am with a short ring; you do not need to leave. A longer, continuous alarm at any other time is real, and we would rather you left for a false alarm than stayed for a real one.

If you have a condition that would slow you down in an evacuation, tell the desk privately. We will agree a plan with you and make sure someone on each floor knows it.

Pausing or leaving

You can pause your membership for up to three months a year, or leave with one month of notice. Both are a message to the desk away.

Return your fob on your last day and clear your locker; anything left behind goes to charity after a fortnight.

Pausing keeps your fob and locker, but switches off desk and meeting-room bookings until you return. Your price stays the same when you come back, even if our rates have risen in the meantime.

If you are leaving because something did not work for you, we would genuinely like to hear it. A two-line email is plenty, and it goes straight to the people who run the building.
